Designed by the Cabel B Robinson and opened in 1997 Praia del Rey is one of Portugal’s finest courses and has been recently ranked number 13 in the latest Golf World top 100 European Golf Courses.
Situated close to the medieval town of Obidos on the Atlantic Coast and just one hour north of Lisbon the course offers plenty of variety and is laid out through a mixture of pine and sand dunes. Measuring 6449 metres from the back tees it is designed to be played by all standards and at the same providing a serious challenge for even the most accomplished golfer. Tree lined fairways and great dunes are a feature of the front nine. Standing on the second tee is a feast for the eyes, with stunning views of the Atlantic and the Berlengas Islands nature reserve in the distance. From the beautiful fourth hole, with its elevated sloping green cut into the hilltop, the course winds its way inland through dunes and tall pines. The par 3 eighth is a wonderful hole. From the elevated tees among pines you are faced with a shot to a shallow green, sloping from back to front and protected by a large pond. Even off the yellow tee at 113 metres club selection can be tricky. Off the 166 Metre white tee it gets really interesting.

The back nine offers a different challenge. Dominated by great sand dunes and Atlantic views, it has a real links feel. With deep bunkers and sloping greens it offers great variety as it makes its way along the cliff and you again marvel at the Atlantic views. Try to drive the short par 4 thirteenth where trouble awaits in the form of 3 well placed bunkers waiting to gobble up wayward drive. As you face towards home marvel at the long uphill par 5 seventeenth. Cleverly designed with a fairway that gets narrower the closer you get to small, slightly elevated the green and out of bounds on both sides, this is the most challenging hole on the golf course.
The beautifully appointed clubhouse boasts a terrace which overlooks the tenth fairway with views beyond to the sea.
